EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

March 13, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Heather Altman, Vice President Ron Banner, John Forstrom, Merodie Gentile, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller, President Mike Ruehle, and Treasurer Laura Spence. Executive Board member Amber Lee was absent. Forty-six additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

Secretary Jeff Miller reported a total of 233 current members. Treasurer Laura Spence reported a balance of $2,965.71 in the checking account.

Lieutenant Ken Rosenthal, LBPD East Division, introduced himself and said he has been recently assigned to the division. Questioned about a recent fight on Second Street, he said he had no information and would be able to report next month.

Mark Hungerford, Long Beach Community Planner, noted the variances currently being requested and reminded us about the survey being conducted concerning the Southeast Area Development and Improvement Plan (SEADIP), the regulation which prescribes and governs the zoning and development of the region.

Jeanette Gavin, the BSRA representative on the Parking Commission, reported last month's meeting of the commission: A vendor presented a plan for robotic parking structures, plans were discussed for trash receptacles on Second Street for recyclables, and the plan to extend jurisdiction of the commission and pay for a restroom at the Tot Lot was dropped.

Julie Maleki from Councilman DeLong's office reported plans to place trash receptacles on the beach with advertising on them and noted that signs were recently installed marking Lois Lane,  the newly-named street adjacent to Livingston Drive.

Greg Mellen, a reporter for the Press Telegram, requested support for keeping editorial control of the newspaper in Long Beach. These functions were recently combined with operations at the Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance, by the new owner of the paper.

Derek Burnham of the Long Beach Planning Department presented the list of proposed zoning changes for the neighborhood. Each item was explained, followed by an informal audience poll. The discussion was cut short because of time constraints.

Jon Meyer and Karen Hilburn, candidates for the Long Beach Unified School District Board, introduced themselves and each made a brief statement about their candidacy, followed by answers to questions from the audience. Queries included school safety, vocational education, and legal action involving the Wilson High School gymnastics room.

President Mike Ruehle announced the resignation of Mark Robinson from the Executive Board. Merodie Gentile nominated Heidi Van Horn to fill the position. Following an informal vote of approval by the audience, the Executive Board appointed Ms. Van Horn by unanimous vote.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.
